EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH SPIDERMAN
By Cadet Jennifer Blunt
When greeted by someone, usually one would anticipate a friendly welcome or handshake, however, I can now say that I have been personally greeted by a live band and three star general. Freshly dubbed the most interesting man I’ve ever met, by yours truly, Commanding Gen. In-Bum Chun is the most lively and genuine of characters. As we all gathered around the conference table, we were also served fresh green tea. General Chun gave a most memorable speech with humbling talking points.
Some of the advice he imparted with our team is as follows:
- Always do your best and do the right thing. You don’t have to worry about the outcome because it will work itself out.
- Every person should watch Spiderman 1 and 2 at least three times each, here’s why: Spiderman 1 teaches you that with great power, comes great responsibility. In Spiderman 2, Peter Parker tries to live a normal life by evading his heroin duties, but finds rather, that evil is persistent and continues whether or not you stop fighting it.
- Be polite. Your manners will take you far.
- Keep to the basics. If you can maintain basic standards, then you can achieve anything beyond them. Without achieving basic means, you will never be able to grow.
I don’t think I can ever forget a three star’s recommendation to watch Spiderman for life lessons! In fact, I will now recommend it to everyone I meet.
After the meeting, we toured the rest of the compound guided by Senior Sgt. Maj.Ahn and Sgt. David Choi. We were able to handle and see all types of weapons, communications equipment, and other training equipment, to include scuba, airborne, and rucking equipment. Shortly after that we participated in the Gwangho fitness program that the Special Warfare Command Soldiers train with, and completed it with pride and satisfaction! It was a once in a lifetime experience, but hopefully never the last!!
Overall, I think that this experience was the most memorable due to the direct military to military interaction. I am forever impressed and inspired by the Soldiers and training conducted at the Special Warfare Command. I hope to someday achieve a level of greatness that will inspire others, much like I have been inspired by them. I hope to someday come back to Korea and become a liaison for the ROK and U.S. relations to further strengthen the bond we will forever have!
