FORT KNOX, Ky.—Advance Camp 1st Regiment continues their weapons qualification with several Cadets from A Company 1st Platoon trying to achieve expert marksmanship.

Basic rifle marksmanship tests Cadets skills in hitting the target and all of the fundamentals of shooting. The standard for basic rifle marksmanship is a 23 of 40. For a Cadet to qualify for expert marksmanship, they have to shoot a 36 of 40.
Cadet Cooper Glenn of Valley Forge Military Academy and College was one of the Cadets hoping to achieve expert marksmanship. Earlier in the day, Glenn had shot a 31 and in his final round he shot a 33.
“If you listen and learn what the Army teaches you, they give pretty good instruction on how to properly shoot,” said Glenn.
Outside of Cadet Summer Training, Glenn has had little shooting experience. “I’ve done a little bit of hunting and a year in the National Guard but nothing too serious.”

For Glenn, achieving expert status is a pride booster. “It doesn’t show up for your school or anything, but it means you did your best and put the training you did all year long to the test,” said Glenn.
This year, all Cadets are required to pass qualification in order to graduate Advance Camp. Glenn attended Basic Camp last year and said that you can see a visible difference in Cadets with this new requirement.
“You can see that people are motivated. Last year it seemed very relaxed and this year it’s very go-go-go. We have something invested now,” explained Glenn.
Cadet Summer Training will bring 8,200 Cadets through Basic and Advanced Camp this summer on Fort Knox. These camps are designed to help challenge, grow and improve various skills and leadership qualities within the Cadets.
