FORT KNOX, Ky. – The Fort Knox Water Park reopened approximately a week ago, providing a way for families on Fort Knox to enjoy the summer days.
The water park includes two slides, a baby pool for the smaller kids and water fountains to play in, as well as the general swimming area.
Lesley Clark, a lifeguard at the park, said her favorite part about working at the water park is the energy of all the kids.
“I taught swim lessons at Anderson [Indoor Aquatics Center] before this, so a whole bunch of my students keep popping in here, showing me that they can swim all the way across the pool now and going down the slide and having a good time,” Clark said. “It’s actually kind of contagious, I mean, it might be hot, but it’s a fun, joyful place to work.”
Clark said there is something for every age at the water park. She said the park was designed with families in mind.
“This was gauged towards the young people, the high school kids, the elementary, the little guys to give them something; because an Olympic swimming pool is for lap swimming, it’s for military events,” Clark said. “This was for families. They specifically designed this to give families something to do in the summer.”
Suzanna Hinzman, a mother of two, said she loved the water park when she first visited.
“I like how there’s an area for littles,” Hinzman said. “I liked that there’s food options, really inexpensive food options. The lifeguards seem really attentive.”
Hinzman said she also liked the ability to bring her own food and drinks into the park, so she could pack lunch or snacks for her kids.
“I like that the hours also go until 7 p.m. because my other thought was, if my husband ever got off early, that he could join us here or something after work,” Hinzman said.
Overall, Hinzman said she would recommend the park to other parents, especially since the 10 minute break every hour is helpful as a parent to young children.
“They take breaks every 50 minutes, so there’s a 10 minute break, so as a parent, you get to know you have 10 minutes to sit out,” Hinzman said. “Some of the parents of older kids don’t have to worry about that, but it’s nice for me as a parent of young kids to know that they’re about to blow the whistle, and I’m going to get to sit in the shade.”
The kids also seemed to enjoy their time at the water park.
“I like to put my goggles on and dive for hoops,” said four-year-old Parker Hinzman.
The water park provides a fun way for families to spend time together outside during the summer months. The hours are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The day passes cost $7 for military and $9 for civilians.
