  • By: Savoury Jacobson Almost from the day someone decides to become a soldier, or at least try, leadership comes into play. It is taught, it is learned, it is cemented, and repeated throughout training. Over time, countless leadership books have been written. And during a soldier’s career, the opportunity to lead is guaranteed to happen. Yet it is an elusive concept, something that always seems a little bit out of reach. Anybody can technically command people, given some power. The military is built on a principle that orders will be obeyed regardless of one’s personal feelings. However, true leadership means that […]

  • FORT KNOX, Ky. – Hidden in the forests behind the rappel tower looms its counterpart, the confidence course. Made up of several different obstacles like The Tough One, The Weaver and The Confidence Climb, the course rightly performs its purpose: instilling true confidence in the Cadets of 9th Regiment, Advanced Camp August 8. That statement is more than true for Cadet Milynel Ortiz, a student from the University of Central Florida. • I know what you’re thinking. What can a Public Affairs intern learn if they themselves aren’t the ones going through Basic or Advanced Camp? They’re not the ones sleeping in the woods for days on end, only eating MREs, rucking close to half-marathons before the sun even comes up. And you’d be right. Kind of. Although we may not be the ones marching during graduation, we have spent our entire summer to better understand what it is that goes into becoming a future Army Officer. We are the liaisons, the middlemen, the translators between you and your Cadets. We take what […]
