FORT KNOX, Ky. – Soldiers a part of the 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment, from Fort Carson, Colo., help during the medical evacuation at Fort Knox, Ky., June 14, 2023. The MEDEVAC drill is a simulated scenario that rehearses evacuating sick or wounded patients during emergencies at Cadet Summer Training.
This drill is important to make sure the medical equipment and crew are ready, and the communications are set up correctly for the crew to properly receive and respond to emergency requests.
Pfc. Kenny Crebar from the 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment, explains the purpose of the MEDEVAC.
“Pretty much, there’s a casualty on the ground that needs to be moved, and we’re there to get them where they need to go, as fast as they can, if their life needs to be saved,” said Crebar.
Crebar has been working as a UH-60 Black Hawk maintainer for around a year and a half now, and he works as a crew chief during the MEDEVAC drills, where his responsibility is to maintain and repair the aircraft.
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Sally Thomas was one of the pilots from the 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 4th Aviation Regiment, that flew the UH-60 Black Hawk during the MEDEVAC drill. Thomas has been flying aircraft for around three years now, and she appreciates the team aspect she experiences while flying during the MEDEVAC.
“Everybody has their part, and you really rely on the back-seaters,” said Thomas. “They’re busy in the back making sure everything’s good to go with the patient, and the other crew chief also clearing the aircraft, making sure our landing zone and pickup zones are all cleared for us.”
In honor of the Army’s 248th birthday, Thomas explained that she is proud to be part of the Army because her whole family has served, and she is continuing the family legacy through her generation.
